Lawn Mower Surgery

Ride to the Hospital

The ride to the hospital was long. Thank God the bleeding was controlled with the wrap that the Fire Fighters provided. I was in the back of the ambulance with my son holding his hands and talking to him calmly. My phone battery was dying and I wasn't sure where my charger was.

We arrived to the hospital around 7:24 pm and the paramedics led us to our room. The ER nurse came in to do vitals and to check us in. My son screamed when she tried to remove the wrap from his feet to see the wound. She recommended X-Ray to check for broken bones.

Thank God no broken bones!!! The podiatrist was summoned to come to ER for further diagnosis. My son's dad later arrived to offer support and to stay during the whole procedure. Later, around 10:00 pm, the podiatrist came and surgery was recommended.

The Foot Surgery

My son was given a tetanus shot due to the dirt and germs of the blade. He screamed at the length of needle that was inserted in his shoulder. But, then his eyes got even larger when more needles were brought out to numb his feet.  The meds were inserted into his feet and he screamed so loudly throughout the whole 2 hour surgery ordeal.

Afterwards, the ER physician performed small surgeries to his foot after the major surgery by the podiatrist was conducted. Soon, all was done! There were so many stitches provided to 8 major wounds on his left feet. My little trooper decided to give up cutting grass for the summer and has sworn to never touch a lawn mower ever again. His only concern was his soccer tryouts the next week. He was so hurt from not being able to make tryouts.

 Lawn Mower Safety

The following days ahead after the accident has been a wonderful success. God is in control! It could have been so much worse. As we continue to pray for his recovery, we want to make sure that parents are cautious of their children's whereabouts at all times during lawn care.

There have been many lawnmower accidents each year and anyone regardless of age can become a victim. Riding lawnmowers have claimed the lives of many young children under the age of 5 and have resulted in limb loss for numerous others.

Parents and adults, please keep a watch over youth when they are outside with you and operating yard appliances. They are still small and their reflexes may not be quick as adults to be able to respond to danger.

Therefore, stay close to them when they operate equipment. Make sure they understand the "Do's & Don'ts" of equipment use. Never let them out of your site. Parents, and adults, please be quick on knowing First Aid so that you can get immediate help for your child or in order to help someone else. Your fast response time can be a life or death issue.

Please look at some of the following links of lawn mower injuries in order to know the danger.

Summertime is a time for children to run, jump, swim, play, and to enjoy their youthful selves. Not to be in ER, getting their hands, or feet amputated which can lead to a life on crutches or a wheelchair forever.

Let's be careful and watch our children. I am a mother and my son was hurt due to my neglect. Don't let this happen to your child. Let's be safe this summer!
